Krisp’s Core plan costs $16 per user a month on monthly billing, and its own Zoom page says no separate Krisp participant shows up in the call. That answers a complaint a user on r/AI_Agents put plainly: “some meetings I join they kick out the note taker and use their own one”. This guide covers which AI note takers work without a bot joining the meeting, what they cost for a team of 3, and the 1 rule bot-free doesn’t change. Prices were checked on vendor pages on October 30, 2026.

Is there an AI note taker that doesn’t join the meeting as a bot?

Yes. Krisp and Granola both take notes from your own device, so nothing new appears in the participant list.

Krisp’s note taker page calls it a “bot-free experience for increased privacy” and says it works with Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams. Granola’s pricing page lists “Bot-free, device-audio capture” on all 3 of its plans.

If hosts keep removing your note taker, the fix is a tool that never asks to join, not a better bot.

How does Krisp take meeting notes without a bot?

Krisp sits between your meeting app and your microphone and speakers, so it hears the call the way you do.

Its setup step says to select Krisp Microphone and Krisp Speaker in Zoom, Meet or Teams to turn on transcription and noise cancellation. The Zoom note taker page adds that it “runs locally so you won’t see a separate Krisp participant in your Zoom call.”

The other people on the call see the same participant list they’d see without it.

Does Krisp ever send a bot into the meeting?

Only if you ask for one. Krisp has an optional bot, and it stays off unless you invite it.

The same Zoom page says “there is an optional Krisp Bot feature you can use” when you invite the bot to a meeting through the Krisp app. The pricing page lists “Record with bot” on Core, Advanced and Enterprise.

Bot-free is the default, and the bot is there for meetings where you’d rather have one.

What does Krisp cost for a team of 3?

Core is $48 a month for 3 users on monthly billing, or $24 a month on the annual toggle.

The pricing page shows Core at $16 or $8 per user a month and Advanced at $30 or $15, with a toggle that says annual saves 50%. Core lists an unlimited AI note taker and unlimited transcription, and there’s a 7-day free trial with no credit card.

For comparison, Granola Business is $42 a month for 3 users, and Otter Pro is $50.97 on monthly billing or $24.99 on annual billing, each read on its own pricing page the same day. Otter’s free Basic plan caps transcription at 300 minutes per user a month.

At 3 seats, the bot-free options cost about the same as Otter, so the bot question can decide it.

Do Otter and Fireflies join the meeting as a bot?

Both name an assistant that joins the call. Fireflies also lists ways to record without its bot.

Otter’s plan table says it “joins Zoom, MS Teams, and Google Meet to automatically write and share notes.” Fireflies’ pricing page refers to “the Fireflies Notetaker bot” that joins your meeting, and its plan list also names “Record using Chrome extension without Fireflies bot” and a desktop app.

If your clients or partners remove visible note takers, a joining bot is the one setup that can’t fix that.

Can I use a bot-free note taker on my phone?

Yes, with both bot-free tools here. The Reddit poster wanted exactly that.

Krisp’s note taker page says “Mobile apps available for iOS and Android” and desktop apps for Windows and macOS. Granola’s pricing page lists “Desktop, iOS, Android & Apple Watch apps” on every plan.

Check that the app covers the plan features you pay for before you rely on it away from your desk.

I run 4 businesses, and plenty of the calls that matter are on someone else’s meeting link. When you’re the guest, the host decides who’s allowed in the room, so the note taker that doesn’t need a seat is the one that keeps working.

The trade-off is honesty. Nobody sees a bot, so the only way people know they’re being recorded is that you tell them.

Is it legal to use an AI note taker without a bot?

Bot-free changes what people see, not what happens: the call is still being recorded, so tell everyone at the start.

Some places require everyone on a call to agree before it’s recorded. Krisp’s own FAQ frames its note taker around meetings “recorded with consent”, and Granola lists a “Let people know you’re using Granola” setting on every plan. This is a pointer, not legal advice: check the rules where you and your callers are.

Say it out loud at the start of the call, every time.

Which bot-free note taker should a small business pick?

Krisp, if you also want noise cancellation and the option of a bot for your own meetings. Granola, if you want a free plan and can live with 30 days of history.
